Wrought iron patio furniture brings new meaning to the phrase low maintenance. There aren't many other types of patio furniture that provide the same level of durability then that of wrought iron.

History of Wrought Iron

Traditionally wrought iron was created by master iron craftsmen, heating, then shaping the hot iron with an anvil and hammer, then joining the pieces together using steel bands. While today's wrought iron isn't really wrought iron, as it's now made with mild steel, nor is it created with such craftsmanship, it's still beautiful none the less. Most of the wrought iron patio furniture on the market is mass produced in a manufacturing facility using modern manufacturing methods and mild steel.

Wrought Iron Patio Furniture Styles

While most wrought iron furniture is similar in the general style, details are what set this material apart. Some of the sets have ornate tiled table tops, curved handles and legs, and a large selection of material patterns to choose from for the seating cushions. Finishes vary greatly as well - some being a natural “iron” look to it, while other styles are powder coated for a long lasting and durable finish. Whatever look you're after, you're likely to fall in love with wrought iron patio furniture.

Cost and Quality

While you can get an entry level wrought iron patio set, good for 2 people, for around $399.00, don't expect this to have the details the more expensive pieces have. Most sets in the lower price range are actually cast iron - not manufactured the same way as real wrought iron is.

One drawback with wrought iron sets is that they all require optional cushions, so in addition to the cost of the set, you'll also need to factor in the cost for the cushions. The good thing about this is that when they wear, you can simply replace the cushions and not have to replace the whole patio set.

As with all the patio sets we're covering on this site, you get what you pay for. Higher end wrought iron patio sets will definitely cost more, but the level of detail is amazing and most are still actually hand forged - so no two pieces are exactly the same. Expect to pay anywhere from $1500.00 to $5000.00 or more for a high end wrought iron patio furniture set - good for 4-8 people.

Wrought Iron Patio Furniture Care

The easiest of all patio furniture to care for, wrought iron just needs a good brushing with warm soapy water, followed by a healthy soaking from the garden hose. If you live in a climate that gets a lot of rain, invest in a decent cover and ensure that it's covered when not in use. In the winter, if you get snow, make sure that your wrought iron patio furniture is either stored away where it'll stay dry or make sure that the cover extends all the way down so that the legs are completely covered. In addition use bungee cords to ensure that the cover won't move during windy periods.

For sets that are beginning to show their age, you can take the set into any sand blaster shop and have them blasted off and then have the finish reapplied, usually powder coating is best, as it provides a super tough finish that's very hard to damage.
